Side note: some candidates are asked about a "7th annex" (response to pollution incidents). That's not a MARPOL annex; it belongs to the separate OPRC Convention. Worth knowing it exists, but MARPOL has six.

- Notes scattered across three notebooks, a phone camera roll and half a dozen PDFs from other cadets.

Is it current with the MCA syllabus?
Yes, checked against the current MCA syllabus, last reviewed August 2026.
Does this replace official study material?
No. It's a supplement. Keep your official MCA guidance, textbooks and college notes — this is the layer that turns them into oral exam answers.
I'm not on an LNG carrier. Is it still relevant?
Yes. It was built from LNG carrier experience, but the content covers the general EOOW syllabus that applies across vessel types.
I sat this exam not long ago, and the thing that got me through wasn't more reading. It was saying the answers out loud until they held up under pressure. That's all this is: the notes I made for myself, plus an examiner you can practise against at 0300 in your cabin. Good luck in the room.

Hi, I'm Alex. A lot of cadets have been asking me recently for revision notes or help studying for their oral exams, so after sending my flashcards and study notes to a few friends, I thought I'd compile it a bit nicer to try and help more people. I'm currently working as a 4th Engineer with BP on their LNG ships, as well as doing some volunteering on Logos Hope in my down time.
The content found here comes from my own notes, used to pass my EOOW oral exam in September 2024. The flashcards you'll see have the same content I used to have friends drill me on in the run-up to my exam, but I've polished them from the handwritten notes I used into this pack for you to download and use for your own exam.
I then decided to take it a step further and build an examiner you could talk to for a bit of practice, which, when I've shown it to colleagues at sea, they all agree is quite impressive.
